Woman who opened fire at Joel Osteenâs Lakewood megachurch had âFree Palestineâ on rifle
The woman who opened fire at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston was identified Monday as Genesse Ivonne Moreno.
Moreno, 36, was killed by two off-duty cops working security at the megachurch. She opened fire with a rifle while the church was between services, and the two cops returned fire, according to police. A 5-year-old boy and a 57-year-old boy were wounded in the shootout.
The child is not expected to survive his injuries, the Houston Chronicle reported. Moreno walked into the building alongside the boy, but police officials would not say who shot him.
“That female, that suspect, put that baby in danger. I’m going to put that blame on her,” Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said Sunday at a press conference.
The middle-aged man, who has not been publicly identified, was shot in the leg or hip area and is expected to survive, according to Finner.
Authorities searched Moreno’s home in Conroe, about 40 miles north of Houston, on Monday morning, the Chronicle reported. At the church, Moreno had claimed to have a bomb, but authorities never found one.
Police also searched her home for explosives and weapons, according to the Chronicle.
Moreno’s rifle had the words “Free Palestine” written on it, police sources told ABC News and NBC News. However, police said they were not confident in publicly speculating on a motive for the attack. Lakewood Church is one of the largest congregations in the U.S., but Moreno opened fire between services, when fewer people were in the building.
“I can only imagine if it would have happened during the 11:00 service,” Osteen said Sunday afternoon.
One of the security officers who killed Moreno was also identified Monday. Adrian Herrera, a 38-year-old agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, was placed on leave after the shooting, local NBC affiliate KPRC reported. The other cop, a member of the Houston Police Department, has not been publicly identified.
Lakewood Church is so popular that services are held in a renovated arena that used to be the home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets. Some of Osteen’s services are also broadcast on television in nearly 100 countries.
